QIAGEN’s third-quarter sales grew 5.3%, 4% organically, to $304.3 million (see IBO 11/15/12), with acquisitions adding 6% and currency lowering sales by 5%. At constant exchange rates, Instruments, and Consumables and Related revenues increased 4% and 10% to account for 13% and 87% of sales, respectively. Molecular Diagnostics revenue rose 15% to account for 49% of sales. Academic, Pharmaceutical and Applied Testing sales improved 2%, 3% and 21% to make up 24%, 19% and 8%, respectively. Sales to the Asia-Pacific/Japan, the Americas and Europe/Middle East/Africa climbed 14%, 11% and 7% to make up 19%, 49% and 31% of sales, respectively. Adjusted operating profit climbed 11.0% to $77.4 million.

Halma Health & Analysis sales for the fiscal half year ending September 30 grew 11.6%, 1% in constant currency, to £135.2 million ($214.6 million), and adjusted operating profit increased 10.5% to £30.9 million ($49.0 million) (see IBO 11/30/12). Health Optics, Water and Fluid Technologies sales grew 41%, 10% and 4% to 34%, 22% and 17% of segment revenue, respectively. Photonics sales fell 2%.

Sigma-Aldrich announced that effective January 1, 2013, it will align its organization into three marked-focused business units: Applied Markets, which will serve the diagnostics, testing and industrial markets; Research Markets, which will focus on research products for the life science, academic, government and hospital settings; and SAFC Commercial Markets, which will serve the life science and electronic markets. Frank Wicks, president of Research, was named president of Applied Markets. Eric Green, vice president and managing director of the International region (APLA), was named president of Research Markets. Gerrit van den Dool, managing director of North America, was named managing director of Europe. Jason Apter, chief of staff, was named managing director of the Asia Pacific region.

In November, PerkinElmer announced the opening of direct operations in Midrand, South Africa, which will support operations in Southern African countries with 25 employees and houses a Customer Knowledge Center.

Spectris appointed Steven Blair to its Board in November. He is Business Group director, responsible for the In-Line Instrumentation segment and certain Industrial Controls businesses.

Illumina named Robert S. Epstein, MD, to its Board in November. He is the former chief R&D officer and president of Medco-UBC.

Sales/Orders of Note

In November, Dow Chemical awarded a three-year Lab and Office Facility Management contract for Research Services to Teledyne Brown Engineering as part of a strategic services partnership. Teledyne Brown and Teledyne Tekmar will lead on-site and off-site management and support research services for research facilities in three states.
