The Agilent Foundation announced in July a collaboration, including scientific and financial support, with the Ideker Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego to develop new leukemia identification methods.
Sartorius AG named Reinhard Vogt, who is in charge of Marketing, Sales and Services, and Jörg Pfirrmann, who is in charge of Finance, IT and General Administration, to its Executive Board in July. Dr. Günther Maaz resigned.
In July, PerkinElmer named Lapo Paladini, PhD, to the newly created position of chief marketing officer and senior vice president. Previously, he served as president, Asia Pacific, East Europe, Middle East and Africa and South America.
Hitachi High-Technologies announced that sales for the Biotechnology-related Business of its Life Sciences unit (see page 12) for the quarter ended June 30 declined 16.5% to ¥37,000 million ($38.0 million). The Business reported strong sales of amino acid analyzers and sales of DNA sequencers that were “largely on track.”
In July, AMETEK named Matthew J. Cole vice president and general manager of its Advanced Measurement Technology Division. Most recently, he was general manager of Fluke Thermography, a Danaher subsidiary.
ICx Technologies promoted Wayne A. Bryden, PhD, vice president for Advanced Research, to chief science officer in August.
ICx Technologies expanded its distribution agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific to include all ICx Radiation product lines.
Horiba Analytical Instruments Systems’ second-quarter, revenue declined 24.7% to ¥7,931 million ($75.9 million) to account for 31% of company sales. Segment operating loss was ¥115 million ($1.5 million), compared to a profit of ¥601 million ($5.7 million) a year ago (see IBO 8/15/09). Year-end sales estimates for the segment were lowered by 7% to ¥32,500 million ($328 million), for an expected 15% decline in sales. Segment operating income is forecast to fall 66% to ¥600 million ($6 million).
Sales for Shimadzu’s Analytical and Measurement unit for the quarter ended June 30 fell 24.8% to ¥24,034 ($246.8 million). Segment operating income plunged 59.7% to ¥1,532 million ($15.7 million) (see IBO 8/31/09). Mass analyzer sales increased amid declining demand for chromatographs, surface analysis equipment and materials-testing systems.
In August, Beckman Coulter created Beckman Coulter Genomics, which combines Agencourt Bioscience and Cogenics, to offer comprehensive genomic services.
Millipore appointed John Sweeney vice president of its Life Science Strategic Business Unit in August. Most recently, he served as vice president of Strategy and Marketing Services for the Bioscience Division.
In August, Illumina named CFO Christian Henry to the newly created position of senior vice president of Corporate Development.
