According to China’s Vice Heath Minister Chen Wenjun, the nine departments cooperating under China’s newly approved Food Safety Law will be headed by the Health Ministry (HM). In addition to coordinating the activities of the nine departments, the HM will deal with food safety emergencies, including food safety monitoring and evaluation. Food manufacturers will be monitored under a “credit record system” designed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The Agriculture Ministry will work to standardize agricultural production and will test farm produce at the point of origin. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, along with the State Food and Drug Administration, will regulate food producers. In addition, China’s Cabinet will create a body to regulate the country’s food monitoring system.
