The Chinese government banned in February clinical genetic testing by hospitals and other selected medical institutions. The announcement, which was posted on the China Food and Drug Administration website, cited prenatal testing as an example of the types of tests that are affected. Permission from the government is now required in most cases in order to provide such testing. However, clinical sequencing tests can be offered at pilot locations approved by the National Health and Planning Commission but require certification. Medical devices imported, sold or used for such tests also must receive approval. Clinical genetic tests offered in China prior to the ban included prenatal testing and tests for disorders such as tumors and diabetes.
