China’s State Councilor Ma Kai announced this month that the country will establish a General Administration of Food and Drugs to improve the efficiency of the country’s food safety supervision system. The new Administration will upgrade the existing State Food and Drug Administration, as well as incorporate activities of several government agencies to eliminate conflicting regulations. The current food safety system has more than 5,000 food safety standards from five different departments. The number of employees at the agency will increase from 200 to 400.
