Released last month, new data detailing federal research funding in the US indicates that combined funding for R&D and R&D Plant increased 4.1% in FY14 to $132.5 billion. FY15 funding for R&D and R&D Plant is expected to increase slightly to $132.8 billion, while FY16 funding is forecast to increase 5.8% to $140.5 billion. For Development, R&D funding climbed 1.8% to total $67.4 billion in FY14, while funding for Science and Technology increased 6.3% to $14.3 billion. In FY14, NIH funding increased 4.2%, reaching $29.4 billion, while funding for the NSF increased 9.0% to 5.4 billion. The DOE’s funding jumped 10.4% to $8.1 billion, with funding for the Office of Science increasing 6.2% to $4.1 billion. The USDA had a funding increase of 10.3% to $2.1 billion, with the Agricultural Research Service’s spending climbing 10.6% to $1.0 billion.
