Illumina Acquires Informatics Firm

Illumina stated that the acquisition allows it to offer enterprise-level bioinformatic solutions. NextBio’s platform is used to discover correlations among data sets, leading to the discovery of new associations. According to Illumina, NextBio’s database platforms are used by more than 50 commercial and academic institutions.

San Diego, CA 10/28/13; Washington, DC 10/29/13—Illumina has acquired NextBio, a provider of clinical and genomics informatics, for an undisclosed amount. NextBio’s platforms aggregate and analyze large quantities of phenotypic and genomic data for research and clinical applications. “The combination of Illumina’s BaseSpace cloud computing environment for next generation sequencing with NextBio’s platform for integrating patient data will allow us to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate the entire workflow from sample to result,” said Illumina President and CEO Jay Flatley. NextBio co-founder Ilya Kupershmidt and CTO Satnam Alag will join Illumina. The deal closed on October 28.
