Illumina Buys Microfluidic Technology Company

ALL was acquired for $96 million, including milestones, according to Illumina’s quarterly conference call. President and CEO Jay Flatley highlighted the technology’s ability to increase ease of use and lower reagent costs for NGS sample preparation. ALL has developed products for NuGEN Technologies, Luminex (see IBO 2/15/12) and GenMark Diagnostics.

San Diego, CA 7/23/13—Illumina has acquired Advanced Liquid Logic (ALL) for an undisclosed amount. ALL provides “digital microfluidics” technology based on electrowetting that precisely manipulates small droplets with sealed disposable cartridges to perform complex lab protocols. “For our research customers, ALL’s technology will further streamline the industry’s simplest NGS [next generation sequencing] workflow, while for clinical and applied markets, where ease of use and consistency are especially valued, it will allow us to offer integrated, end-to-end solutions,” said Christian Henry, senior vice president and general manager of Illumina’s Genomic Solutions business. Illumina stated that the technology will enable it to make automated solutions for high-throughput sample preparation more accessible to its low- and mid-throughput customers. For its high-throughput customers, the company recently announced partnerships with automated liquid handing companies (see IBO 7/15/13).
