Invitrogen Acquires Flow Cytometry Start-Up
Responding to IBO’s request for comment, an Invitrogen spokesperson said that the company would not be providing any further details regarding ACS. According to the LANL, Acoustic Cytometry Systems’ technology utilizes acoustic waves to focus the cells and replaces the sheath flow with a ultrasonically vibrated capillary to suspend the cells, allowing for variable analysis times and the use of different types of reagents. Invitrogen currently sells flow cytometry reagents, but not instruments.
Albuquerque, NM 11/7/08—The New Mexico Business Weekly reported on November 7 that Invitrogen has acquired Acoustic Cytometry Systems. Located in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and founded in 2006, Acoustic Cytometry Systems is developing flow cytometers based on acoustic-focusing technology licensed from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and associated reagents. According to a business presentation by Acoustic Cytometry Systems, the technology will enable faster, simpler, lower cost and more sensitive flow cytometers for use in research and diagnostic applications.
