Company Announcements Eppendorf UK named Scientific Laboratory Supplies a UK distributor. Brinkmann Instruments began distribution of VELP Scientifica Instruments’ products in the US. Telstar Life Sciences acquired Clean Air Techniek BV, which sells clean air technology for labs and lab products, and PMV BV, which services clean air products, in May. In May, Sigma-Aldrich fully integrated Riedel-de Haen Laboratory Reagents into its core product brands. The products will be distributed through the Fluka brand. In May, Camlab, a UK-based lab product distributor and manufacturer of specialist laboratory plastics, announced a 4% price increase due to raw material, energy, transportation costs as well as currency effects. Alfa Aesar, a Johnson Matthey company, opened a 35,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center in Ward Hill, Massachusetts, in May. In May, Pall announced a five-year geographical expansion initiative in Latin America, encompassing its Life Sciences and Industrial businesses in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The company will establish a systems engineering design center in Sao Paulo, Brazil, operating under the Pall Advanced Separation Systems group. Felix M. Diaz, previously president of Global Operations for Pall Life Sciences, was named president, Pall Latin America Region. In April, the former Barloworld Scientific (see IBO 10/31/07) was organized into four new companies: Bibby Scientific (see IBO 6/30/08), which offers scientific equipment under the Stuart, Techne and Jenway brand names and is headed by CEO Chris O’Connor; Carbolite, which offers furnaces and ovens and is headed by CEO Martin Leadbetter; SciLabware, which provides glassware and reusable plastic labware and is headed by CEO Edward Wynn; and Sterilin, which provides single-use plastic labware and is headed by CEO John Adkins. In June, Honeywell announced a multiyear distribution agreement under which Loba Chemie will distribute its high-purity solvents to India’s pharmaceutical sector. Honeywell Burdick &Jackson announced a 7.5% price increase for high-purity solvents and reagents in North America and Latin America, effective July 15, citing the costs of raw materials, energy and freight. In June, GenVault closed an additional $13 million in venture financing. C. Ashton Newhall, a partner at Montagu Newhall Associates, and Paul J. Mirabella, president and CEO of Naviscan PET Systems, joined the Board. Effective August 1, Thermo Fisher Scientific will implement an average price increase of 5.3% for certain lab consumables products that it manufactures, such as specialty laboratory plasticware and liquid handling products, in response to increases in raw material and energy costs. Heidolph Instruments GmbH, which employs 400 people worldwide, and Radleys formed Heidolph UK in July.
