As part of a MYR 741 million ($251.2 million) research fund for Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP), MYR 178.4 million has been designated for 1,022 research grants. The amount is intended for R&D for a project’s first two years and extends to public and private higher learning institutions, research centers and the Polytechnic Studies Department. The Ministry has established new research grants for exploratory research, long-term research, prototype development research and fundamental research. Five-year grants totaling MYR 38 million were given to five universities in the priority areas of infectious diseases, tropical medicine, energy and water security, global warming, technology communication and information, food safety, and “advanced manufacturing and added value.”
