Malvern Enters Calorimetry Market

For biologics development, Malvern also offers particle-characterization systems, including the NanoSight systems that the company acquired last year (see IBO 9/30/13), and viscosity-measurement systems. The acquisition underscores Malvern’s expanding business for biopharmaceutical applications. GE Healthcare acquired MicroCal in 2008 (see IBO 9/30/08).

Malvern, UK 6/4/14; Engham, UK 6/4/14—Malvern Instruments, a Spectris business and provider of materials and biophysical-characterization technology, has acquired MicroCal from GE Healthcare Life Sciences for an undisclosed amount. A provider of differential scanning calorimeters and isothermal-titration calorimeters, MicroCal generates $30 million in annual revenues. “MicroCal products are an excellent fit with Malvern’s existing portfolio of measurement solutions for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries,” stated Paul Walker, managing director of Malvern. “Their ability to deliver information about drug binding and protein stability is entirely complementary to Malvern’s current products and to those in development.” Malvern will retain MicroCal’s main location in Northampton, Massachusetts. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter.
