Alpha MOS acquired Swiss firm Smart Nose, which makes an MS-based electronic nose, in January, following its liquidation, for CHF 40,000 ($43,000). Alpha MOS stated that the acquisition expands its intellectual property and its consumables offerings.

In March, Prosolia exclusively licensed from the Estate of Professor John B. Fenn sample introduction and ionization technology using a porous “wick” for MS and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS).

AB SCIEX opened in March a new Asia Pacific Application and Training Center in Singapore.

In March, AB SCIEX announced the expansion of its commercial operations in Brazil by taking over Life Technologies’ former MS operations in the country in order to provide direct sales and support.

AB SCIEX announced in March its Academic Partnership Program, under which it will partner with academic researchers for advancing research in proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics. The Program formalizes and expands the company’s previous academic partnership approach and includes reference materials, access to regional technical specialists and sponsorships.

IO Informatics and Sage-N Research announced a strategic partnership in March to integrate their respective Sentient software suite, which provides semantic data integration and management, and SORCERER Enterprise.

Waters announced in March a comarketing agreement with Protea.

In March, Waters and the Irish National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training announced a multilevel partnership, which includes the establishment of the Complete Product and Processing Characterization Facility and the Waters Center of Innovation in the area of glycobiology research.

Shimadzu’s MALDI Business Unit and Sony DADC extended their collaboration in March to further develop application-specific, barcoded, disposable MALDI targets. The first such target, the Fleximass DS, was developed as part of the iDPlus platform for microbial research.

In March, Abbott’s PLEX-ID instrument obtained CE marking in the EU.

Bruker announced in March a collaboration with the University Medical Center Groningen as part of the new European Network for Rapid Identification of Anaerobes, which will set up an anaerobic strain collection.

Product Introductions

Excellims launched the AIMS2100 Electrospray Ionization–High Performance IMS–MS System, an add-on for MS systems to enable simultaneous IMS and MS analysis.

IonSense released the DART-OS Source for use with the OpenSpot Sample Cards, which eliminate the need to dissolve samples in solvents and transfer to and from sample containers. It mounts between the DART source and MS.
