PerkinElmer Adds to Food-Testing Capabilities

The purchase expands PerkinElmer’s food-testing business into online and inline instrumentation. Perten product lines include laboratory and process NIR spectroscopy systems, products for specific applications, such as gluten testing of wheat, as well as viscometry, rheometry and texture-analysis systems. Perten has more than 200 employees. Its direct competitors in the food- and grain-testing market include FOSS and Kett.

Waltham, MA 11/24/14; Stockholm, Sweden 11/24/14—PerkinElmer has agreed to acquire Perten Instruments from Valedo Partners Fund, the Perten family and key staff of Perten for $266 million. Perten develops and markets instruments, a food-quality-calibration database and ancillary services for advanced QC of food, grain, flour and feed. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Perten has annual revenues of around $65 million. “The combination of Perten’s unique capabilities with PerkinElmer’s portfolio of innovative analytical instruments will enable us to further penetrate the multibillion dollar global food-testing market, including longer-term opportunities in higher-growth regions such as China,” stated Jon DiVincenzo, president, Environmental Health, PerkinElmer. “PerkinElmer will now be firmly positioned to help customers address rigorous regulations for food-quality control, import/export product testing, and the need to preserve the integrity of global supply chains.” Scheduled to close in December, the transaction is expected to be approximately $0.04 accretive to 2015 nonGAAP EPS and to have minimal impact on 2014 nonGAAP EPS.
