Oberkochen, Germany 11/13/14—ZEISS has announced that it plans to reduce costs in its Microscopy business, according to a Google translation of a German press release from the company. The aim is to save at least $100 million in the medium term and to increase profitability and competitiveness. Three-quarters of the savings will come from fixed expenditures. In addition, an estimated 300 positions will be eliminated, equally divided between domestic and foreign employees. In fiscal 2013, the Microscopy business generated €629 million ($828 million = €0.76 = $1) in sales to make up 15% of ZEISS revenues (see IBO 4/15/14).
