Chinese pharmaceuticals could drive down the price of generic drugs. According to IMS Health, the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) approval last year of Zhejiang Huahi Pharmaceutical’s generic form of Nevirapine, an AIDS drug, indicates a trend. IMS reports that at least 10 other Chinese companies are bringing generics to market, with some appearing as soon as the end of this year. However, recent quality scandals could hurt Chinese suppliers’ prospects. China is the world’s largest supplier of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
