Roche Acquires Kapa Biosystems

Since December 2013, Kapa has manufactured library preparation kits for distribution by Roche (see IBO 2/28/14). Kapa has 200 employees, according to a Roche spokesperson. As an example of how Kapa enzymes can improve sequencing workflow performance, the spokesperson cited the HyperPlus Kit, stating that it “provides a streamlined two-and-a-half-hour workflow that includes fragmentation and library preparation in a single tube.“

Basel, Switzerland 8/19/15—Roche has agreed to acquire Kapa Biosystems for an undisclosed amount. US-based Kapa provides life science reagents for NGS and real-time PCR applications, including enzymes such as novel DNA polymerases. Roche stated that Kapa’s protein engineering technology is customizable, generates large numbers of variants and can rapidly provide enzymes with tailored performance for certain applications. “Kapa’s technology and products complement our current expertise and offerings such as the portfolio of target enrichment products for NGS,” stated Roland Diggelmann, COO of Roche Diagnostics.
