While the future of UK science is still uncertain post-Brexit, British scientists have been assured that their EU research projects will still receive funding from the British government, as long as the projects were bid for before the UK officially exits the EU (the date of which has not been set). The UK receives billions in funding from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 initiative, which currently has a budget of €74.8 billion ($83.6 billion). After Brexit, however, EU scientists began pulling out of research projects and grant applications in which they collaborated with UK scientists due to the ambiguous future of UK science (see IBO 7/31/16). British scientists may still be unable to apply for funding from Horizon 2020 once the exit is final, and the government has yet to announce plans to replace the post-exit lost funds with local investments.
