New Gas Clean Filter Technology From Varian, Inc. Reduces Contamination in GC, ICP and GC/MS

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 11 — Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq: VARI – News) announces today three significant advances to its Gas Clean Filter System, for delivering clean gases for GC (gas chromatography) and GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry), LC/MS (liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy) and ICP (inductively coupled plasma) operations.

New to the Gas Clean family is a carbon dioxide filter that improves the sensitivity of both flame photometric detectors in GC and the CO2 detector in Total Organic Carbon analyzers, helping chemists get better results from their instruments.

Also new is the universal high-flow base plate that handles flow rates up to 20 L/min, compatible with all Varian filters. The range of applications is expanded and includes the use with collision gas to prevent mass interferences in LC/MS, and for argon supply filtering in ICP-OES and ICP-MS.

Improvements to the absorbent materials in both the GC/MS and moisture filters allow them to stabilize more quickly to reduce downtime and improve productivity.

In gas chromatography, the filters are positioned in the gas line between the compressed gas cylinders and the instrument. Reducing contamination in the gas reduces the risk of column damage. With the filters in place, chemists can save money by using less expensive, lower grade gases and still get the results they require. For example, the filters provide immediate savings of up to 50% on helium, with no loss in analytical quality.

Using Gas Clean Filters with Varian’s FactorFour(TM) ultra low-bleed columns and new GC instruments creates the best combination for optimal GC and GC/MS performance.

“Enhancing the Gas Clean Filter System provides a broader choice of options for analytical chemists to match their specific requirements,” said Martin O’Donoghue, Senior Vice President, Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. “As part of a complete solution for our GC, GC/MS and ICP customers, the improved filters reduce costs while offering equivalent or improved data quality.”
