Shimadzu Analytical Instruments opened a Taiwanese subsidiary in November 2013.

In November 2013, Imspex Diagnostics acquired GAS, a provider of ion mobility spectrometry technology.

For the fiscal half year ending September 28, 2013, Halma Environmental & Analysis revenue grew 9.4%, 3% organically, to £82.6 million ($127.3 million) to make up 25% of revenues (see IBO 11/30/13). Adjusted operating profit fell 3.2% to £15.0 million ($23.1 million). US, UK, Europe and Other sales grew 4%, 61%, 7% and 9% to account for 41%, 19%, 16% and 7% of sales, respectively. Asia Pacific sales declined 9% to account for 17%. The company also established a standalone Photonics business in China.

Modern Water opened an office in Shanghai, China, in November 2013.

PerkinElmer named Jon DiVincenzo president, Environmental Health, and senior vice president in December 2013. He replaces Maurice “Dusty” Tenney, who moved to a newly created position overseeing global operations and customer logistics. Most recently, Mr. DiVincenzo served as president and CEO of Enzymatics.

Life Technologies formed a partnership with LabCentral, a Boston-based shared lab space designed as a launch pad for life science start-ups.

Analytik Jena announced a restructuring of its Japanese subsidiary, which had fiscal 2013 sales of €5.5 million ($7.2 million). The subsidiary expects to be break even in the fourth quarter fiscal 2014.

Bio-Rad Laboratories named Robert M. Malchione, formerly with Avery Denison, to its Board in January.

Agilent Technologies exclusively licensed Population Genetics Technologies’ VeriTag technology, which allows for the detection of minority genetic variants on next generation sequencing platforms to levels below 0.1%. VeriTag retained commercial rights for human infectious disease diagnostics, veterinary diagnostics and plant genomic uses.

Agilent is collaborating with Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University to develop new solutions for the biological treatment of wastewater, including a real-time monitoring system for wastewater treatment and a less energy-intensive water treatment method using micro-organisms. The goal is a portable, low cost analytical kit for use in developing countries.

Agilent awarded a grant to the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute for translational research in cardiometabolic disease.

In January, Bruker named Dr. Gilles Martin, CEO of Eurofins Scientific, to its Board.

AMETEK Advanced Measurement Technology appointed Blue Scientific its exclusive UK distributor.

GE Healthcare reported that Life Sciences sales grew 8% in the fourth quarter 2013.

Waters CFO Jon Ornell resigned on February 1.
