City governments in China are taking measures to improve the supervision of food safety. Oversight had been managed by multiple departments, resulting in an inefficient system. Some local-level governments have combined the bodies responsible for food safety. In Tianjin Municipality, for example, the Tianjin Market Quality Supervision Administration was established, unifying the separate duties of the industry and commerce administration, quality and technical inspection, and food and drug administration under a single body. The reorganization will facilitate a more unified system for inspection, and the department plans to conduct oversight at the township level. Other cities implementing similar changes include Zhoushan City, Shenzhen City and Pudong New Area in Shanghai.
