Science and technology are major sectors of investment for China’s next five-year plan, according to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. China’s 13th five year plan from 2016 to 2020 will include a 9.1% increase to ¥271 billion ($41 billion) for science funding, as well as a focus on environmental sustainability and a cutting back on bureaucratic red tape for scientists to promote R&D. Other priorities for the five-year plan include establishing national science and space centers and programs, as well as producing gas turbine planes and engines domestically. They also plan to concentrate on neuroscience and genetic research, and prioritize cloud computing, medical devices and big data. According to the new plan, national investment in R&D will comprise 2.5% of GDP.
