The European Commission (EC) announced the two winners of its Future and Emerging Technologies competition to fund groundbreaking, large-scale research initiatives involving multiple scientific fields and EU states. Graphene, led by Professor Jari Kinaret of Sweden’s Chalmers University, involves more than 100 research groups and has an initial budget of €54 million ($73 million) over 30 months. The Human Brain Project is led by Professor Henry Markram of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The projects will each receive around €1 billion over 10 years from public and private sources. The EC’s Information and Communication Technologies 2013 Work Programme will provide up to €54 million to each for their first phase, staring this fall.
