Earlier this month, Vice President Joe Biden announced the latest progress of the Cancer Moonshot Task Force goals. The Task Force’s mission is to accelerate cancer research to successfully prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, providing improved screening procedures, treatment options, medical information and community care for patients, as well as more effective cancer prevention tactics within the next five years. Vice President Biden announced five strategic Task Force goals: generating and accelerating new scientific advances in cancer research through interdisciplinary collaboration for understanding the biological causes for cancer; creating a database of clinical, environmental and public health information for shared clinical and research data; accelerating the time it takes for patients to receive new therapies through enhanced regulatory and licensing procedures; improving cancer prevention and diagnosis processes through progressive health programs to educate Americans in cancer risk reduction; and amending care and access programs for cancer patients to ensure each patient receives top quality care and treatment.

Goals for next year include creating a shared clinical dataset resource, strengthening collaboration between academic institutions and the private sector, updating the criteria for participating in clinical trials, screening environment-based chemicals through high-throughput in vitro assays, improving the quality of IP rights for innovation, generating a system that standardizes clinical data and expanding the range of pharmaceutical sponsors in international clinical trials.
