Illumina Offers the $48,000 Genome

The service will sequence a genome to 30 times depth, providing information on SNP variation and other structural characteristics. Illumina has previously collaborated with consumer testing firms that offer genotyping services. According to Bio-IT World, Knome provides a service similar to Illumina’s that is priced at $99,000, which includes additional services such as counseling.

San Diego, CA 6/10/09—Illumina has introduced a service program offering human genome sequencing with complete coverage for consumers at a price of $48,000. The service will be performed at Illumina’s CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) certified laboratory. Illumina is also establishing a protocol, infrastructure and community for large-scale adoption of personal genome sequencing, including the creation of a physicians network. “By providing this service now, Illumina can help catalyze the development of the infrastructure and physician education that will be necessary as genomic information becomes medically more meaningful,” stated Illumina CEO and President Jay Flatley. Partners in the community include consumer genomic services firm 23andMe, deCODE Genetics, Knome and Navigenics, which will offer secondary data analysis.
