Switzerland

As of September 15, the EU agreed to allow Swiss scientists to apply for some Horizon 2020 funds, despite the country’s vote to bar immigration from Croatia (see IBO 2/28/14). The European Commission granted Switzerland the same status as other EU nations under the Excellent Science pillar of Horizon 2020, which includes grants from the European Research Council. However, Switzerland does not receive the same consideration under the second and third pillars, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges, respectively. This means that while Swiss researchers can still partner with EU countries in applications, they are not eligible for direct funding from the EU. In addition, Switzerland cannot be counted in minimum eligibility requirements for participating in consortium-led projects. The agreement runs through 2016.
