ATCC is Awarded National Cancer Institute Funding to Establish Physical Science-Oncology Centers Bioresource Core Facility

MANASSAS, Va.–ATCC, the recognized leader in biological materials management and processes for cell provisioning, has been awarded funding for 5 years from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD to establish a Physical Sciences-Oncology Centers (PS-OC) Bioresource Core Facility (PBCF). The goal of the PBCF is to create a facility that will be a centralized biodistributor and biorespository that serves and provides the PS-OC Network Investigators with consistently high quality and authenticated reagents.

The facility will be managed by Dr. Yvonne Reid, Manager Scientist at ATCC and Program Manager for the PBCF. “ATCC is the recognized source for authenticated materials. We enable researchers to obtain reproducible results, which is crucial to ensuring that their research efforts are consistent and allows for inter-lab comparison,” said Reid. There is considerable evidence of widespread cross-contamination and misidentification of cell lines. As such, the validity of research data relies heavily on the accurate identification of cell lines, making authentication, like that provided by ATCC, vital to the integrity of research efforts.

This core facility is an important step in fulfilling the mission of the Office of Physical Sciences-Oncology (OPSO) and the PS-OC. “We are excited about this opportunity that will allow ATCC to support the OPSO and the PS-OC as they promote cross-disciplinary research,” said Andrew Cawthon, Director of Government Contracts at ATCC. “As the trusted source for the global research community, ATCC shares this interest in helping physical scientists and oncologists to accelerate new fields of study in basic and clinical cancer research.”
