Olink and scientists at Uppsala University founds a new instrument company: Q-linea AB

UPPSALA, SWEDEN, 7 July 2008 – Olink AB, a Swedish biotechnology company, has recently founded the instrument company Q-linea AB together with scientists at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Holding AB. Q-linea will develop a new, rapid, and sensitive detection instrument for analysis of, e.g., biological warfare agents. The main customer is currently the Swedish defense material procurement agency, FMV. The biosensor instrument is based on a unique technique, developed at Uppsala University, to detect single biomolecules and particles. With this technique it is possible to detect and count infectious agents in air and water samples fast and accurately. Q-linea AB collaborates closely with scientists at the university as well as microbiologists specialized in bio-warfare agents at the Swedish Defense Research Institute (FOI) in Umeå, Sweden. Q-linea will develop the instrumentation platform while the reagents will be developed by Olink AB. “We are very happy to give this exciting instrument project a new opportunity in a more focused effort in a new organization, while Olink can continue to focus on our core business in the reagents/service field. Together we will now be able to develop the concept in our respective fields of expertise. We have identified a significant business potential for the biosensor concept in the future”, comments Björn Ekström, President and CEO of Olink Bioscience. Jonas Jarvius, President and CEO of Q-linea AB adds: “This is really exciting. There is an enormous need for rapid and accurate detection of pathogens in a wide range of fields, such as food safety, veterinary medicine, and clinical diagnostics. Initially we will focus on bio-defense applications, where governments and organizations world-wide currently are committing significant resources.” About Olink AB Olink AB is a privately held company based in Uppsala, Sweden, founded in 2004 by Prof. Ulf Landegren and partners. Olink focuses on innovative methods for detecting endogenous proteins and protein complexes for basic research and high-content screening to deliver accurate information on disease mechanisms and drug response. Our mission is to contribute to a better understanding of the interactome. For more information, visit www.olink.com.
