FEI Acquires Start-Up

Designed for cryo-TEM biological-sample imaging, KonTEM’s thin-film phase plate offers greater durability and more accurate positioning than previous phase-plate designs, according to the company.

Bonn, Germany 5/22/14—German firm KonTEM, a developer of phase-contrast technology for TEM, has been acquired by FEI for an undisclosed amount. High-Tech Gründerfonds, an investor in KonTEM, announced the sale. KonTEM’s technology improves image contrast without affecting resolution. KonTEM is a spin-off of the Max Planck Society and the Center for Advanced European Studies and Research. The company’s products are currently in the testing phase.
